April 2007

I could not wait until May to tell you this exciting news.

At Sun City last weekend, The Moreira Project won a SAMA for Best Producer!!! Isn't that great. It was the most amazing weekend. The whole of Sun City absolutely buzzed. The hotels were full of artists, photographers, film crews, important industry people, record label bosses etc etc. Just about every radio station affiliated to the SABC had mobile units there pumping music and doing interviews.

Friday night we had drinks on the Bridge of Size before being taken to the outdoor amphitheatre where the first of the awards ceremonies was being held. Because it was outdoors, MTN very kindly provided us all with blankets! We were very nervous but the awards went quickly and efficiently. We were ecstatic when Claire Phillips won the Best R & B category - Cape Town got its first award. The awards were in no particular order so when they called the category for Best Instrumental Album and it went to Paul Hamner, we weren't really paying attention. Suddenly the category of Best Producer came up and there was the cover of the album and when they announce that we had won, we were completely stunned. Lesley says she can't remember anything from that moment until I sat down again. I know I had no idea what to say as an acceptance speech and managed to mumble thanks to some people and congratulations to the other nominees. I don't remember much of the rest of the awards ceremony!! Then came the swarms of photographers. Finally we managed to get up to the tables on the Observation Deck for supper. It was an evening that I won't forget easily.

Saturday morning I was dragged out of bed at the crack of dawn for a stunning interview with Weekend Live and a bit of improvisation with jazz vocalist Elaine Kokot. I managed to rest during the day in preparation for the big night. This time in the Superbowl. The guests were received on the yellow carpet full of photographers again. Then we were ushered into a room for pre-drinks. Promptly at 19h00 we were instructed to move to the Superbowl. The organisation was utterly amazing. Getting thousands of dignitaries and musicians into the Superbowl and sitting down is no mean feat!

What an entertaining show. Kabelo was an outstanding MC. Everything worked like clockwork. When it was time for our category of Best Contemporary Jazz Album there was this huge camera stuck centimetres from my face in case we won. We didn't - it went to Simpiwe Dana but I thought I was going to faint. Lesley said afterwards her heart was beating so fast she thought she was going to have a heart attack! The night went on. Some deserving winners and some controversial but huge fun none the less and an awesome experience.

So on April 15, 2007, The Moreira Project, MoreStar Entertainment, Moreira Chonguica and Mark Fransman came home with a SAMA on a debut album, produced in Cape Town on an independent record label.!!

Thank you to everyone for their well wishes. We so appreciated the support.
