October 2009 NEWSLETTER
I have spent most of October so far out of Cape Town so I have missed a lot of the season weather changes. I was in Nelspruit to play solo at a private function on 2 October and drove to Maputo to join the collaboration of Italian and Mozambican musicians in a jazz festival. I had fun at the gala opening on the 6th with the Italian band members and my band arrived on the Thursday to play at CFM on Friday 9th October. On the 10th we flew to Beira to play there. That was a treat as it was my first time playing in Beira. Thank you to all the audiences in both cities for your support and energy.
Thank you to the Italian musicians for coming to Maputo to show us a little of your style. Thank you also to Vodacom for your generous sponsorship of this collaborative festival. Have a look at some of the pics in the gallery.
The last few weeks have been meetings, presentations and more meetings! My goodness, Mozambicans love meetings!
I have had a few amazing hot days in Cape Town and went into the studio to play around a bit with some new ideas. I am back in Maputo this weekend for a workshop I was invited to by Essencial magazine. Thank you Milva and all the ladies for making me feel most welcome! What a treat to spend a Saturday in the company of so many beautiful women.
I am ending the month by going to Port Elizabeth with Rene the DJ. We always have loads of fun.
On a sad note, South Africa and the world lost a great musician this month in Winston Mankunku Nkosi. For me as a fellow saxophonist, Bra Winston was an amazing icon with a generous spirit. I am really saddened by his passing.
This year is fast on the downhill slope with two months left. I hope to stay busy and play lots.
Talk to you soon
