Well 2014 has certainly ended on a high note.

October started with a function in Cape Town to celebrate the collaboration with South African functional art designer Carrol Boyes to launch her African inspired range of limited edition premier wine. Together with Nadir Tati from Angola, we signed the bottle labels that will soon be gracing the tables of Mozambican and Angolan households. Carrol Boyes signature artwork is translated on to the labels of these bottles. This is a union of music, art, fashion and winemaking that will become an essential element of well-stocked cellars around the world.

A few days later, Tlale Makhene, Tony Paco , Helder Gonzaga, Thapelo Motsegwe and I travelled to Macau , an island off Hong Kong to take part in the Cotai Jazz and Blues Festival at the Venetian Macau.

We were invited as the only band from Africa. 12 bands were chosen from 183 entrants and we spent a week with bands from all over the globe. The entrants were from the US, India, Taiwan, Finland, Brazil, Portugal, The Phillipines, Hong Kong, france and Hungary. After performing our set on the Saturday evening, the bands were cut from 12 to 6. These final 6 were to perform on Sunday. We made the cut on Saturday and nervously approached Sunday’s performance. We were the third band to perform. We gave it all we had and a little African muti as well….After all 6 bands had played, the judges made their decisions. When we didn’t hear our name called as the third or the second place we felt sure we had lost out …but no…we had won first place!! Needless to say we didn’t sleep much on Sunday night and got on the plane back to Africa hungover but very happy.

We had literally landed than we went straight into the Mozambican presidential election which Frelimo won with candidate Filipe Nuysi. Very exciting to watch democracy in action.

Then it was time for the Mozambican Music Awards. Always a highlight on the music calendar for Maputo. I was invited to present an award.

BCI the sponsors of the MMA’s decided to donate a substantial amount to the Escola Nacional de Musica over the next three years as their charity of choice. So grateful for their generosity.

In the midst of all of this, my girlfriend, Nadja Cassimo and I decided to tie the knot which happened at the end of November. Thank you to all our family and friends who participated in the happy occasion on the Saturday at the Polana Hotel and the Xiguiane on the Sunday. Many friends travelled from far and wide to attend at short notice and we are so grateful.

To top a great few months, the CD that culminates the wonderful HIV/Aids project Sensasons arrived on 1 December just in time to celebrate World Aids Day.

All that remains is for me to wish you a very good festive and holiday season and roll on 2015!

Much love and abraços,
